Much of the flavor of the City of Charlottesville comes from the classic architecture styled by Thomas Jefferson and his University of Virginia. You’ll find a lot of brick and white columns, serpentine brick walls, and graceful landscaping that seems to have something in bloom nearly all year. In Charlottesville you can walk on the same streets where Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe walked centuries ago, and of course “tradition” is treasured.
But as much as the UVa school life influences the atmosphere, there are other aspects of Charlottesville that attract visitors for a variety of reasons. One major draw is the Downtown Pedestrian Mall which is only about a mile from the university. The downtown mall features many blocks of brick streets that are closed to traffic, lined with dozens of restaurants, theaters, and unique shops. At one end of the mall a Pavilion provides an entertainment venue, and the whole atmosphere is family-friendly and fun. You’ll find plenty of local people at the downtown mall too, this is not just a tourist place but instead is a meeting ground for the entire community.
