Albemarle County is Going Green

The government of Albemarle County is going green, and hopes to save money and reduce the county’s carbon footprint at the same time. Albemarle County is located in Central Virginia surrounding the town of Charlottesville.

All new county buildings to be constructed will meet stricter energy standards, beginning with the new Crozet Library. In addition since 2003, the county has bought new hybrid vehicles.

Albemarle County has set a goal of reducing internal energy use by 30% by 2012, and has pledged to reduce greenhouse gases by 80% by 2050.

Charlottesville Botanical Garden – how does that sound

When the Meadowcreek Parkway and the new YMCA sports center are constructed, Charlottesville ‘s McIntire Park will lose some of its’ land. However, a new group headed by Helen Flamini envisions a botanical garden for the remaining green space. The garden would not only fill the role of protecting the environment, but would be a tourist attraction and a beautiful outdoor destination for area residents. The park would consist of 40 acres of trails as well as plants, flowers, trees, greenhouses and conservatories.

Charlottesville Celebrates Photography

Today is the final day to catch Look – Charlottesville Festival of the Photograph. The festival describes itself as "three days of peace, love, and photography. A festival for those that love the still image, celebrating the careers of lengendary artists, emerging tallent, and the best work from the year." It is a not for profit event developed by photographers and consisting of exhitits, workshops, interviews, and screenings attracting professional and amateur photographers from around the world.

The three featured presenters are:
Mary Ellen Mark – exhibit: Prom, at the McGuffy Art Center, June 6-30
Joel Peter Witkin – exhibit: The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, at the Second Street Gallery, June 6-26
James Nachtwey – exhibit: The unvanquished, at Les Yeux du Monde, June 6-30

During the festival the Charlottesville Downtown pedestrian mall has been transformed with huge photographic banners. There are also many other exhibits in conjunction with the festival at galleries throughout Charlottesville, Virginia during June.

Welcome to Greener Pastures

This is my first post in my Albemarle Horse Country blog.

Albemarle County is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and is the county surrounding Charlottesville, Virginia. This is an area of rolling hills and pastoral scenery set in front of a mountain backdrop. There are numerous horse farms and large and small estates. There are also residential developments in a country setting with varying lot sizes.

The largest employer in the area is the University of Virginia which makes for a stable economy. The presence of the University also provides for a wealth of cultural activities. In addition opportunities abound for enjoying the outdoors from horseback riding, foxhunting, hiking, cycling, golf, tennis, soccer, lacrosse…the list goes on.

The area also has an extensive historical tradition and boasts being the home of three presidents.

Cental Virginia has a moderate climate with four distinct seasons and is a region of great natural beauty.

In succeeding posts I will explore the many features and events that life in Charlottesville, and Albemarle County has to offer.
