Charlottesville Health Care

Charlottesville and the Central Virginia area is blessed with an extensive network of hospitals and medical health care services. The two main hospital systems in Charlottesville are the University of Virginia (UVA) Health System and the Sentara Martha Jefferson hospital. In addition there are various other holistic, alternative, and acupuncture options, but for now let’s discuss the two main hospitals.

UVA Health System
The UVA hospital system is the largest in the area, anchored by the UVA hospital facilities in Charlottesville and affiliated with the university as an academic hospital. The UVA main hospital features outpatient services, 700 inpatient beds, surgical and diagnostic treatments, and 71 neonatal intensive care beds. You can click here to access Details of UVA Hospital

A large part of the UVA Health System is its satellite network of regional centers to offer access to specialized care in nearby counties across the area. Those services include inpatient/outpatient, imaging, primary care, surgery, and a clincial cancer center. You can click here to see specific Locations of UVA Medical Facilities

Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital
Sentara Martha Jefferson was formed when the former Martha Jefferson Hospital merged with Sentara Healthcare in 2011 to expand the range of its services and treatment options. The Charlottesville hospital is a 176-bed care center with 365 affiliated physicians.

Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital enjoys a spectacular location on Pantops Mountain in Charlottesville with a new facility built in the early 2000’s. This allows services that include a Cancer Care Center, Digestive Care Center, Cardiology Care Center, Orthopedics including Spine Surgery & Joint Replacement Surgery, Bariatric (Weight Loss) Surgery, Neurosciences including Neurosurgery and a Sleep Medicine Center, Stroke Care Center, Thoracic Surgery, Vascular Medicine & Surgery, and a Women’s Health Center.

Annual Blessing of the Hounds – A Don’t Miss Event

A favorite Keswick tradition is the annual Blessing of the Hounds at Grace Episcopal Church.  The lovely historic stone church is the backdrop for the outdoor service which is attended by the members of the Keswick Hunt in full hunting attire mounted on their horses and surrounded by the pack of foxhounds.  The traditional service includes blessings for horse, hound and rider as well as prayers in thanks for the harvest bounty.  After the service you can walk across the road and watch the beginning of the foxhunt.

The service begins at 10:30 and the public is welcome.

Cismont and Keswick Virginia are located a short drive outside of Charlottesville, Virginia to the east.  The service has been held annually on Thanksgiving Day since 1929.   Come out to Grace Church tomorrow and become part of the tradition.

More Acclaim For Keswick

P1010056 (WinCE) Keswick, Virginia located just east of Charlottesville, Virginia was cited in the New York Times today, October 24, as a scenic haven.  The article Pastoral Landscapes And Upscale Retreats by Stephen Wells, which was printed in the Great Homes and Destinations section, describes the allure of life on a Keswick horse farm and also in the gated communities of Glenmore and Keswick Estates. According to Mr. Wells it is the "image of upscale rural America that best defines Keswick and its surrounding communities".   Read the article for the full story.

Albemarle County Goes Green – Should Albemarle County Allow Wind Turbines?

Wind turbineAlbemarle County could allow private wind turbines on private property within the next six months.  At this time zoning in the county prohibits the installation of wind turbines.  However the Albemarle Planning Commission is studying whether to permit small personal turbines at private county residences.  These turbines may not be a cost effective way to generate power, but they could help with the reduction of greenhouse gases, which is a long term goal for the county.  Whatever the commission decides regarding personal turbines, there will definately not be commercial wind farms in the counties future.

Charlottesville, Virginia and Albemarle County have increasing numbers of green built and energy efficient homes for sale.  If you are considering buying or selling a “green” home in the Central Virginia real estate market, contact me and I would love to discuss how I can help you with your real estate needs.

Batten Down the Hatches – Glenmore Braces for Hannah

Silly riding horse The horses at Shadowfax LLC at the Glenmore Equestrian Center in Keswick, Virginia are all snug in their stalls as we wait to see which way tropical storm Hannah will go.  Early today the storm was predicted to head up the coast and Albemarle County was forecast to get a total of about an inch of rain.  However things have changed, the storm is tracking further west, and as of 6:00 p.m. the forecast was for 4-7 inches of rain with maybe 3 inches in a hour.  Needless to say we made sure that all of the horses stayed in their stalls for the night.

Luckily the Glenmore Equestrian Center is on publick water.  This is very important because if the storm knocks out the power there is still water for the horses.  Most farms are farther out in the country and are on a well.  Wells need power for the pump; so if the power is out for several days there is no way to pump the water.  One of the things that I used to do whenever a bad storm was forecast was to fill up every spare bucket, tub and water trough so that there would be a supply of water for the horses.  That works okay if you don’t have a very large barn, but since Shadowfax has 26 stalls it would be hard to store enough water to tide the horses over for very long.

The horses at Glenmore are safely tucked in for the night with plenty of water, a supply of feed and bedding, and since Baily who owns the business lives in the barn appartment, there is always someone on site to make sure that all is well.

The Glenmore Equestrian Center which is run by Shadowfax LLC is a full care facility offering boarding, training, instruction and horse sales.  It adjoins the Glenmore Community located in Keswick Virginia just east of Charlottesville, Virginia.

If you are looking for an equestrian community which offers elegant Charlottesville homes and all the amenities of a gated, golf development, I would love to show you Glenmore.

Or perform your own search of all of the Glenmore and Albemarle County homes on the market.
