Construction Begins At Bundoran

Construction has started on the first home to be built on the 2,300 acre Bundoran development. This unique community is comitted to natural preservation, conservation of natural resources and the environment. The 100 homes to be built will be required to meet the standards for the Earthcraft designation. In addition, the majority of Bundoran’s acreage will be under conservation easement and deed restriction designed to limit development and insure the continuation of the community’s natural beauty. It will be exciting to watch Bundoran’s creation. I think it will be raising the bar for future area projects.

Crozet Farm – The First To Receive Conservation Funding

A 288 acre farm in Crozet, Virginia is the first property to be protected from development under a program that was funded by the 2007 General Assembly and designed to stop the loss of farmland and forests. The farm has 128 acres in agriculture and more than 6,700 feet fronting on the protected Beaver Creek Reservoir. Under the program Albemarle County was the recipient of a grant of $403,220 to purchase the development rights.
Albemarle County now has more than 74,000 acres of farm and forest protected. They especially target properties that protect critical natural resources. The use of easements can help to keep farmland in agriculture by compensating a farmer for money that he might receive from developers.
The use of conservation easements is one more tool to use to keep the balance between growth and farm land in the Charlottesville area. It is important to preserve the rural beauty that makes Albemarle County such a special place in which to live.

Piedmont Environmental Council – Preserving Albemarle’s Rural Heritage

One of the key organizations in the preservation of Albemarle County’s rural beauty is the Piedmont Environmental Council. The PEC is "a 35 year old non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and protecting the Piedmont’s rural economy, natural resources, history and beauty."

A variety of regional, statewide and national issues are delt with that impact the northern Piedmont area of Virginia. These include the conservation of farmland and forests, solutions for traffic congestion and transpotation, preserving clean air and water, protecting wildlife and their natural habitat.

The Piedmont Environmental Council serves 9 counties and 1 city in Central Virginia: Albemarle, Charlottesville, Culpepper, Orange, Madison, Rappahannock, Greene, Fauquier, Clarke, Madison. Regarding Albemarle County and the city of Charlottesville the focus is on keeping a balance between city and county. In all of the areas where towns are impinging on the countryside there is an emphasis on building communities where residents can enjoy both the towns and the open countryside.

The PEC has had a major impact on the stewardship of land in the Piedmont and can boast one of the highest densities of private conservation land in the United States. This is not a time to rest on our laurels. If we want to keep our rural countryside, one of the things that we can do is to support the efforts of the Piedmont Environmental Council.
