Shadowfax Riders in the Glenmore Parade

Every July 4^th the Glenmore Community has a parade through the neighborhood. Any community member is welcome to participate and we always see an array of decorated golf carts. This year's parade included a contingent of dedorated horses and riders from Shadowfax LLC at the Glenmore Equestrian Center. The riders included Allyson Louthan, her daughter Tyler and grandson Linden, Shelly Payne, and Sidney Simcoe. Baily Dent even decorated the barn tractor and drove that in the Parade.

This post is a little belated, but I just got the pictures and I wanted to share the fun.

Glenmore is a gated community located in Keswick just east of Charlottesville, Virginia. The nighborhood offers an active lifestyle with many amenities such as country club, golf course, tennis, pool, fitness center, and adjoining equestrian center.

Is There A Recession In The Albemarle County Horse Industry?

For several months this spring the Virginia Horse Journal had an ongoing discussion about whether there is a recession in the Virginia Horse Industry. One of the points that everyone agreed on was that the rising cost of gas was having an impact on horse ownership. Due to an increase in transportation costs prices of feed and supplies are going up. We will see an increase in the cost of hay this year in the Charlottesville, Virginia and Albemarle County area due to the higher price of fuel to run the tractors and hay making equipment. Luckily so far this summer we have had ample rainfall; so we should be able to buy hay locally and not need to incur the added expense of shipping hay in from other states.

Many stables are seeing customers cutting back on extras. They are taking fewer lessons and going to fewer horseshows. The stable owners are forced to raise shipping fees which also results in a smaller number of cllients who are able to afford showing. Unfortunately it is a no win situation as stable owners will either need to raise board or cut back on services. It looks like we will need to tighten our belts for a little while until the Virginia horse industry rides out the next few months before it can rebound as it always does.

Make Hay While the Sun Shines

While driving around the countryside on the last couple of weekends I have noticed a lot of beautiful hay being cut and baled in the fields of many Albemarle County farms. After a particularly dry winter, above average rainfall in April and May has "saved the day" and resulted in lush pasture growth. In fact we switched into such a rainy pattern that I began to worry that we would not have enough dry days in a row to be able to make hay. Luckily this has not been the case and it looks like area farmers have had the opportunity to bring in a good first cutting.

Now I’m keeping my fingers crossed for continued rain throughout the summer. After the past two drought years Central Virginia horse owners would like to see a year with a plentiful crop of good local hay.
